sarah ellerton is very busy with her own comic and a job. if the art isnt always up to par its because shes pressed for time, but id say the comic is still looking very beautiful.

The construction errors on the girl's kimono are irritating me. Kimono are made out of rectangles, which means no set-in sleeves, which means the seam joining the sleeve to the body should be further down her arm. Also, they appear to be standard western sleeves, with no long dangly bit.

ok, yes, sorry, by "normal hooker" I meant "not a proper geisha". not the best word choice :D
anyway I was referring to your comment on "page 33: Closed" (the first of your comments which explained something about this discussion):

Hard to tell if you're kidding or not. I certainly never said anything like that. I made it clear that she's an onsen geisha in previous comments.

The starting quality is incredible in comparison to many webcomics or just comics in general, but you have to keep in mind that it's possible Sarah can't spend the extra hours it takes to make extremely detailed panels anymore (this is merely my own speculation, not a fact). The fact is, even with the change in coloring, it's still amazing to look at, and that's all that matters to me in terms of the pages.

(I believe one thing you probably noticed is the decrease in smoothness on the face's colors or clothes. It's no longer as realistic, and creates the idea of it being lower quality.)

Perhaps he can't go to sleep because he doesn't _want_ to go to sleep... Sure he's interested in what's going on with the girl he's been connected with his entire life, but perhaps he's a little, if not subconsciously, interested in the girl he's currently sharing a room with.

I remember reading somewhere (probably Sarah's twitter) that she changed her technique in some significant way after the first few pages of Dreamless. I forget what the details were, if any.

Again, it could also be the fact that Sarah has gone back and enhanced the first 23 pages which somehow makes them look better and that she'll do the same with all these at some later date.

I don't know if you follow Sarah's "The Phoenix Requiem", but she's been going over the entire first volume and significantly upgrading and improving the quality of work that she did about two years ago. Currently you'll notice a significant difference between pages 118 and 119 of TPR.

@charles81: Yeah, I was talking about the details. For instance, compare page 2 with the current page. I definitely agree with you in that the feeling and general essence of the script is captured every time and that's what's most important. And I understand the amount of work that goes into each page. I was just pointing out an observation. I tend to be a tad anal about consistency.
As for the story itself, no critiques there. Sure the story's going a little slower than it was at the beginning, but that's to be expected and I have absolutely no issue with it whatsoever. I have read the whole comic back and it still flows beautifully.
I'm also pleased to see that my comment has not resulted in a slew of defensive responses.

Keep up the good work, the both of you.

the_pale_lady: There's already been some discussion on whether the lady is a geisha for real, an onsen geisha, or just a prostitute dressed up like one last comic page. I personally don't think that needs to be re-hashed, because all it does is deter from the page itself. I know, you may not have looked at those comments, but then again you may have.

I'm personally looking at this page for the prettiness that Sarah can draw--and it is QUITE lovely work. Sure, that info (whether the woman is a geisha/onsen geisha/prostitute) could give a little more understanding as to what's going on with his friends, but I doubt Bobby & Sarah will keep us in the dark for too long about that.

His face is particularly striking in the first panel, but I love the art throughout the story. Beautiful attention to detail. I kinda like the anticipation of waiting for updates, especially for a tense story like this. I look forward to the next installment!

@Wyvern: *shrug* If you're talking art then I don't see it. Might be the lighting in the Onsen Geisha's room which has a lot of tones very close to skin tones. But good art is also about knowing where to have good detail to draw attention and where to go a bit more casual. If you look at Takashi's eyes in the first panel, The Onsen Geisha's face in the 2nd and 5th together with the rope burn on Takashi's wrist in the 4th you'll see how it draws attention to the important parts of the panels. The 3rd and last panels only needed to show the general actions of Takashi getting untied and then trying to go back to sleep.

Plus IMHO the page just before this one is probably one of the best examples of very impressive art. Sure you can look at the detail in the General's hands down to his fingernails, but I think the really important part is the capture of the feeling in the General's face and even Captain America's.

*meh* Another thing to remember is Sarah's well known for going back over pages and tweaking or enhancing them before they go to print. She did this with the first 23 pages so if they do look more detailed or something, that might explain it. She'll probably do the same for these pages when the time for them to be printed looms.

As for the story. I have noticed that the page-by-page hits we were getting have sort of died down a bit. It's probably only every 2nd or 3rd page which is really sparking us up unlike the first 23 where nearly every page had us on the edge of our seat for the next. But I put this down to the story slowing down to get into the main tale of these two, unlike the initial pages which had to explain everything and set the scene as quickly as possible. It's hard in a weekly comic, or pretty much any comic, which is read one page at a time, but if you read through all pages at once the story is still going quite nicely. All up, the story will probably be a bit like Saving Private Ryan where you've got an amazing beginning, a slower story through the middle and an epic ending. I think Steven Spielberg called it having "bookends".

As much as I love this comic, I can't help noticing that the quality of the pages are slowly deteriorating as the comic progresses. Unless it's intentional to show tension or something...

Ummm I don't think she is a geisha...boys like that would not have been able to afford an actual geisha. Geisha were on the level with celebrities in US before, during and after the second world war. Prostitutes often dressed like them though.
