Dreamless: DREAMLESS

  • Bobby Crosby · 11 months ago
    Page 1: Last Rites

Welcome to Dreamless! I hope you like it. I'm not going to spoil anything about it whatsoever, so I'll keep this brief. It's an idea I've had for almost a decade and I'm very excited to finally start it.

When I put out a call for artists a month ago, I was pleasantly surprised to hear from Sarah Ellerton of The Phoenix Requiem, which you should all be reading if you're not already. This seemed like the perfect project for her and I want to thank her for the incredible job she's doing.

Vote for Dreamless to see my hilarious sketch for this page.

New page every Monday, so we'll see you next week!
  • Talizmyn · 11 months ago
A very pleasant surprise, this is.. I look forward to the results of this. :3

    RSS has arrived!
  • Bobby Crosby · 11 months ago
Please let us know what any annoying ads are FOR, so they can be found/removed.

And thanks for all the great comments so far!
  • Zelly · 11 months ago
Wow! This is great! I love both your stuff so "hehe!" at seeing you working together. Can't wait for more. =)
  • Tom · 11 months ago
Wow, this looks really good already. Not just the art, which is amazing, but even what short bit of writing here is such a mood setter. I'm looking forward to this story.
  • Mike · 11 months ago
Great, I have loved all the commics written by you so far, so I have high spectations this ones, good luck with this, and all of your other proyects.
  • Rachael · 11 months ago
I absolutely love Sarah Ellerton's artwork! I can't wait to read more. :)
  • Choko · 11 months ago
I'm amazed to see this, I'm just speachless.
  • Bobbi · 11 months ago
Oh what joy is this? I've been following Sarah's work since about midway through Inverloch. She is a brilliant artist. And I found Last Bood and Marry Me through a friend. Both stories I glommed on to very quickly because not only was the art amazing but the stories were scintillating and easily loved.

Now I get to have one of my favourite writers work with one of my favourite artists? What joy! I'm very much looking forward to this particular endeavour.
  • Adam · 11 months ago
Wonderful to see people behind some of my favourite webcomics uniting under a single banner. :)
It's already made a great first impression.
I think the only negative thing I can think of so far is the "Dreamless" title at the top with the generic Photoshop pattern fill. Pretty cheesy. Aside from that minor gripe, everything so far is amazing.
  • Megan · 11 months ago
Big fan of both the artist and the writer (I read all of each's comics). Boby's got a nice little dark streak in alot of his comics, which is nice and refreshing compared to many of the lighter comics out there.
  • Allyka · 11 months ago
I've been following Sarah's work since part way since Inverloch as well, and I love her artwork. I'm wanting to see more right now, this little bit has me going "ooo, what's gonna happen?" I'm also thinking I should go read Last Blood and Marry Me right now, If I can get caught this quickly on the first page I bet those two are great too
  • Bobby Crosby · 11 months ago
    Try Marry Me first!
  • Allyka · 11 months ago
Hehe, I did search that one first, and I'm already reading it right now :)
  • KEZ · 11 months ago
Ooo, followed a link on Twitter. Awesome to see all the concepts Ellerton posted in comic form. Certainly whetted our appetites to see what she was up to! Looks like this is gonna be awesome!
  • Morraha · 11 months ago
WOOT! I loved Marry Me, and Both of Sarah's works, So this ought to be a real treat!!! :D
  • Anko · 11 months ago
Wow, the art is superb, and the story captivating already.
  • brashley46 · 11 months ago
You and Sarah are going to make a great team! Yummie.
  • Stephanie · 11 months ago
YAY!! Sarah!! This is amazing and beautiful!! I can't wait to see the rest of the novel!
    -Fan since mid-Inverloch!! <3
  • Vincent Alliath · 11 months ago
    That's... beautiful.

I've also followed Inverloch since about halfway through, when a Belgian friend of mine recommended it. Since then, I've gotten through to The Phoenix Requiem.
I can't believe that the (on average) top webcomic on topwebcomics is written and illustrated by a person from my state.

But now... I'm telling you. This will give The Phoenix Requiem a run for its money I'm guessing.
  • Manda · 11 months ago
    THIS IS AWESOME.
Your writing and Sarah's art is going to make an amazing comic :D
    heeee
  • Gaia · 11 months ago
I'm so excited about this! I'm an avid follower of both Bobby and Sarah's work, so seeing this comic bring so much talent together is like... like... like watching a Reese's cup put together! Peanut butter and chocolate, what a great combination - mmmm!
  • Eden · 11 months ago
I started reading Sarah's comics from Iverloch, its totally awesome. Then there is Phoneix Requiem...and best of of now this! Marry Me has quite an interesting plot too...this will be a comic to watch!!!
  • Falling-Pixie · 11 months ago
i have followed sarah and from the pictures ive seen of this story, i cant wait for it to get going! ^^ sounds VERY interesting!
  • David · 11 months ago
    Wow...

This looks amazing. Will be sure to keep coming back for more.
  • Zypher · 11 months ago
Did I honestly find this on the first day? I've only recently (does novemberish count as recent?) found both you, Bobby, and Sarah, and I am going to be fascinated by this. Sarah has been giving hints of the art in her voting incentives for Requiem, and I've been dying to know what it was. I will definitely be following this.
  • donk-donk · 11 months ago
What time will you be updating the page in March? in March?
  • Rebecca Heineman · 11 months ago
    Let's see where this goes
  • Lucretiel · 11 months ago
Looks awsome. Any chance of an RSS anytime soon? Excited, nonetheless, I am.
  • Jacquelyn · 11 months ago
Very intriguing! I will definitely keep my eye on this comic.
  • Elliott · 11 months ago
Oh my goodness! You got Sarah Ellerton? Dude, you hit the proverbial JACKPOT. Way to go! Just fantastic. She's a great writer also! This is going to be first rate, I can just tell. Kudos to both of you.
  • Bobby Crosby · 11 months ago
A couple weeks ago Sarah asked how the search for artists was going and I said, "At this point I almost don't even care, since I hit the jackpot with you, so even if I hired no one else, the call for artists would have been a big success."
  • Anon · 11 months ago
It's great you got Sarah, but I wouldn't be surprised if it ended up intimidating other potential artists from applying, thinking they'd have to match her level of talent. Hopefully that won't happen, though.
  • Bobby Crosby · 11 months ago
To Anon: It certainly will for some, but that wouldn't be such a bad thing, since I highly doubt the type of person I might hire would feel that way. The intimidated people would be the ones who had no chance anyway, for the most part. Sarah's work on this project will help tremendously in the artist search, I feel, because it will make strong artists feel more comfortable with giving this a shot. "If Sarah Ellerton's doing it, maybe I should consider it." Also, her art will make this comic a lot better than it otherwise would have, and the more good comics I'm involved in, the more appealing the job is.
  • Katie · 11 months ago
What a treat! One of my favorite comic writers and one of my favorite comic artists working together!
I can't wait to see what kind of great work comes from this. :)
  • Elle · 11 months ago
Sarah is a wonderful artist, great choice Bobby! And I'm glad to see another comic written by your good self, you put so much flair and drama into a series, but not exhausting to read!

(Best of luck with Last Blood!)
  • Doz · 11 months ago
I was pleasantly surprised when I saw a notice in TPR announcing that Sarah Ellerton would be illustrating your new comic, 'cause I saw your call for artists a while back. You two are going to make an amazing team - this is gonna be fab!
  • Rien · 11 months ago
Very compelling, can't wait to see more. :)
  • Bubble · 11 months ago
Wow! Great job! I'm a big fan of you both so this should be amazing!!!!
  • Pandoya · 11 months ago
Sarah Ellerton and Bobby Crosby teaming up for one venture? I cannot come up with a pop culture team up reference nor a metaphor to accurately describe the sheer epic-ness that is this "Dreamless", but I shall try.
It's like if Chuck Norris and Professor Xavier joined forces to become the ultimate being, and by simply existing, all evil was removed from the world.
  • Pookah · 11 months ago
GIANT GREEN FLICKERING AD!! MY EYES!
  • corroded · 11 months ago
    NO RSS! D: D: D:
  • mitsukaiten · 11 months ago
i must admit... i'm terribly excited about this. i'll definitely be checking back. ^^
  • HeBD · 11 months ago
yeah wont be viewing this if their is no rss... sarah can u post an rss link on ur site? o_O
  • annoyed · 11 months ago
The super-blinking ad I'm seeing to the right caught my eye first, it is the most annoying thing ever to be on the same page as one of the 12 or so webcomics I read daily for at least 10 years.

I'm withholding comments about the comic itself until this is removed.
  • Grant Gould · 11 months ago
Weekly is fine. No RSS is fine. But weekly with no RSS? The comic had better be frickin' incredible.

Of course with authors like this, it just might be.
  • TazTheTerrible · 11 months ago
    Artsangel + Crosby = Win!

Anything Sarah does is always awesome, and Marry Me was splendid! (I also read Last Blood, but that wasn't quite as good as Marry Me in my personal opinion)
  • SEA · 11 months ago
    This should be...interesting. ^_^

    Be checking back for more.
  • chaotic.calm · 11 months ago
This looks awesome! I love Sarah's art and I am now going to head on over and check out some of the comics you have already written! I'm really looking forward to next Monday!
  • MinervaStar · 11 months ago
OMG I've loved Sarah's work since Inverloch so I was excited to see she's working on yet another project this morning! And where I have not read any of Bobby's work I'm defently going to start. Looking forward to next Monday to see more :)
  • Araith · 11 months ago
This looks promising indeed. I don't think I've read other work of yours but I'll be sure to keep an eye on Dreamless. Thanks for the pleasure in advance.
  • anon! · 11 months ago
    Nyeee! A Sarah Ellerton-drawn work!
This i gonna be good :3
  • spas · 11 months ago
i don't know your work, bobby, but i'm a big fan of sarah ellerton - of course you know she is one of the top comic creators on the internet - thus, many of us will read this comic to see her artwork. i think you're right that her involvement will bring you other good artists.

i am curious to know more about the story, though - so mysterious! well, well, well. if this is good (and it would have to be!) i'll take a serious look at your other comics - any in the fantasy genre?
  • Brent · 11 months ago
Well, looking forward to reading as much of this one as I can! Very cool artwork and an immediate magnetic pull :)
  • Eregnon · 11 months ago
Not to be picky, but the anointing of the sick (or last rights, whichever this is) are always done with the right hand, never the left.

Unless, of course, this is set in an alternate universe where they do things differently.
  • ArtsAngel · 11 months ago
@Eregnon Sorry, I must profess complete ignorance to these kinds of rituals. Do you think it's something that should definitely be fixed? Could be a challenge, but I want to make this perfect :)
  • Eregnon · 11 months ago
I wouldn't worry about it. I think I'm the only one who noticed. Maybe I'm the only RC who reads your comics. :)
  • Faticia · 11 months ago
@ArtsAngel One of the awesome parts about Catholicism is that every detail is important. Most don't change whether the sacrament is valid or not, but they are all filled with a ton of symbolism. If you want this to be perfect, I would suggest changing it. I'm sorry I'm not more knowledgeable on this specific sacrament otherwise I would help more. newadvent.org might have something of use for this or the future, if needed. It's a giant online Catholic encyclopedia.
  • Faticia · 11 months ago
@ArtsAngel Another detail, the priest would most likely be holding a Book of Blessings and would have the container (probably some type of phial) of oil either in his left hand with the book or somewhere near at hand. ( I messed up the link in my earlier post, but I fixed it--sorry about that!)
  • Fr. Chris Decker · 11 months ago
typically the little green book "Pastoral care of the Sick" or if it's set before 1970, "Rituale Romanum" or if he were a really astute priest, the formula would be memorized (as we are encouraged to do for emergencies when no book is available!)
  • Jen · 11 months ago
You should set up an RSS for this! ^.^
  • Karhe · 11 months ago
I second Jen! RSS would be great!
  • Chris Crosby · 11 months ago
We're working on getting RSS set-up now, keep checking.

Congratulations on your new comic Bobby and Sarah!!! It looks great so far (as I'm sure it will continue to be).

Best of Luck to you! Can't wait to read more!
  • Volfram · 11 months ago
The author of Marry Me and the artist from The Phoenix Requiem? This webcomic can't help but be legendary.
  • Uilleand · 11 months ago
I saw Sarah's pics on dA and just about wet myself with joy!! I'm SOOO looking forward to this!!
  • moonpie · 11 months ago
This is great! You guys are two of my favorite webcomic artists. I'm so happy you're working together.
  • Sheyarah · 11 months ago
-Squeels with delight and absolute fangirly-ness-

I can't believe it! My favorite web comic artist of all time with my favorite writer... I think I'm going to die now of shock and absolute love... It's like being given dessert before dinner.. Like being handed sixty million dollars and told to go out and have fun.. it's a...a...
    -Simply dies-
  • Steriema · 11 months ago
Jellifish is right, as are the others...
Well, third comic I'll follow from the first day, first one was from Sarah (The Phoenix Requiem), second one was from Bobby (Marry Me 2), third one from both of them... WOOOW... Too much overjoy!
  • LadyArilyia · 11 months ago
I love her work and yours! this shall be great! I have been waiting for more of your work to come out since Last Blood ended. :)
  • Matt · 11 months ago
Interesting start. Personally, I prefer the art style of Pheonix Requiem, but this is still good. I'll get back to you again once I've read more.
  • daymon · 11 months ago
What a way to start the new year, found your new story and it looks good so far. Keep it up both of you.

I don't supposed we can also get a regular link that goes to the latest comic automatically? I generally prefer to bookmark comics in that form (and then check them obsessively).
  • Mari · 11 months ago
Oh WOW, of the two people working together some day, this wins. :) I've read both of Sarah's stories and I read Marry Me and loved it all, this has to be great, there's just no other possibility. ;)
  • M · 11 months ago
One of my favorite webcomic artists and one of my favorite webcomic writers.
    This just might get interesting.

Well... since Sarah is already painting The Phoenix Requiem, I suspect more than one page a week would be madness.

    Anyway... woo! :D
  • Perturbed · 11 months ago
    Fail.
Don't make a stupidly-epic post and advertisement about how awesome your comic is, how mind-boggling it will be, when you only have ONE PAGE POSTED.
  • Bobby Crosby · 11 months ago
Yeah, and posters for movies are totally pointless, I guess. Come back in a year and a half if you want to read the whole thing in one sitting.

A lot of people like to say they were there on the first day. Now very few of them will be lying.
  • Ghost · 11 months ago
Wow my two favourite artist working together? This will be awersome.
  • Kaellya · 11 months ago
Congrats on your project finally taking flight. I'm very excited to see what will come of this. Sarah, like many have stated, is one of my favorite artists. I discovered her half way through Inverloch. Which was a very good story that I go back to read often when theres no update on Phoenix Requiem. Haha.
And your stories as well are very good. I enjoyed Last Blood and thought Marry Me was adorable.
I'll be excited to see this take off, and be sure to read the updates. Good luck!
  • Ronnibear · 11 months ago
I'm so excited. I can't WAIT! i'M FAVING THIS right NOW!
  • Eran · 11 months ago
Excellent. I enjoyed Marry Me, and I love the Seraph Inn comics - this will be awesome!

Also, Bobby, the annoying ad that people are talking about is a blinking green "Congratulations you've WON!!" banner. No idea what it's for, because I don't click those banners. But really, it's the stuff of epileptic fits.
  • Eran · 11 months ago
More accurately, it says "THIS IS NOT A JOKE: Congratulations You Won!" and then has fake buttons for "cancel" and "click here to claim".

Augh, and now there are two of them, one at the top and one on the side.
  • Bobby Crosby · 11 months ago
Thanks. Working to find/remove them now.
  • Kiri · 11 months ago
I've read Marry Me, I've read Inverloch, and I'm following The Phoenix Requiem.

I can't think of anything else that is so inspiring, as a the beautiful artwork of Sarah Ellerton, and the storytelling of Bobby Crosby.

This webcomic is bookmarked! Absolutely wonderful!
  • Black Cat Godess · 11 months ago
Oh my, I do believe this has just made my day. I saw an add for this while reading another webcomic and I had to take a look. I've also been reading Last Blood and Marry Me for some time, along with Inverloch and The Phoenix Requiem, but I never could have imagined you guys teaming up.

And to think, she's been teasing us with this! That Sarah is a sneaky one indeed. ^^ This is most certainly going in my favorites folder.
  • Ellie · 11 months ago
How exciting! I love your writing and I love Sarah's art. Putting the two together will be so awesome!!! I can't wait to see how this turns out.
  • Name the Rabbit · 11 months ago

Arg. the art is awesome... but i got a little frustrated trying to figure out if i was missing the button to the next page. thought i was going crazy.
  • Keyaroscuro · 11 months ago
Haha, I had a feeling Sarah would be doing a project with you when I saw her mentioned in your artist search post earlier. Yes! I love both of you, this is going to be awesome. <3
  • Cyrik · 11 months ago
Yes, yes and Yes!! One of my favorite artists on the net combined with a writer who has no end of new ideas, this is going to be great. ^_^

I found marry me yesterday, read the whole thing. Then I read all of last blood, and I'm slowly trudging through the formidable archive of +Ev.

I've been reading Phoenix Requiem almost from the point that Sarah began to publish it on the web.

I am a very happy individual.

...And now I know where that one vote incentive that Sarah had on your site recently came from. :-)
  • Cyrik · 11 months ago
    @ Ghost.
"Wow my two favourite artist working together? This will be awersome."

Both artist's eh? Hehe, you're a fan of BC's MS Paint storyboards too?

  • Elle · 11 months ago
If there's just one thing that I love about everything that Bobby does, that stands out, is that he actually takes time to reply to comments! Some authors just don't give a damn! Go Bobby! :D

  • Atari · 11 months ago
What a combination! I can't wait to see how this turns out! It certainly looks good so far!
  • Tiffany · 11 months ago
I almost passed out when I figured out that Sarah would be illustrating one of your stories! I loved "Marry Me" and "Last Blood," and I am a long-time reader of Sarah's work, so I am very excited to see what "Dreamless" will be like!
  • Ayashi · 11 months ago
holy crap Bobby and Sarah Ellerton working together? I think that defines epic. Not sure how she's gonna handle the comment crew master Crosby draws in, but Sarah fans have never struck me as the "WHEN IS THE NEXT ZOMBIE VAMPIRE UPDATE" type. This is going to be amazing, awesome grab getting sarah on the artwork. Time to stop typing and start reading ;)
  • Salgor · 11 months ago
Wow I can already tell this is going to be epic. looking forward to keeping up :-D

  • Jenny · 11 months ago
    I got here from The Phoenix Requiem. Maybe two days ago I read all of Marry Me after following a banner posted on SMBC. The coincidence is freaking amazing, and I must say. I'm already far too excited for this collaboration than can be contained in this one strip and goodness I want Monday to come. ^_^;;

(*somehow* I get the feeling that the "he" the woman speaks of is -not- God. Who? Who? Who is it?)

OK, I'm a reader of both Sarah and Bobby's comic/s but I'm almost certain I'll be a fan of this combined effort.

Two super names like this in the web-comic world, working together on a project is just full of win-cream.

Looking forward to your story Bobby, as illustrated bo Sarah.

  • Fr. Chris Decker · 11 months ago
very beautiful artwork! I'm certainly looking forward to the story line with such a captivating beginning. I'd echo @Eregnon on that point of order, any anointing is traditionally done with the right hand. Further, the priest is usually wearing a stole, even if it be a smaller one - violet or white (usually violet), and perhaps the most important note, a person is always anointed on the palm of the hands unless the one being anointed is a priest. Since he received the oil of Sacred Chrism on his palms at his ordination, he would not be anointed with the oil of the Sick in the same spot, he would be anointed on the back of the hand. It's kind of a nod of respect for the Sacrament of Holy Orders. This of course, is not always pastorally workable if one cannot get to the palm of the hand. And as an artist, that'd be a whole panel to redraw! I'll submit to artistic license on that one :) Excellent work though! You got the Sacramental formula right!
  • Katie · 11 months ago
I'm so excited to see this! I've read Marry Me, Last Blood, Inverloch, and I always check in to see the Phoenix Requiem. Seeing this comic made my night.
  • Limene · 11 months ago
I'm stoked. A collaboration between one of my favourite comic artists and one of my favourite writers?

This is going to be awesome.
  • Sci_Guy · 11 months ago
Alright! another comic by Bobby. And Drawn by Sarah? I thought she said she was too busy to draw another comic. Man, some people have all the luck; and all the talent.
On a personal note, i am thrilled to finally be in on the start of a webcomic, not joining it late in the game. I am but a few updates away from "I liked Dreamless before it became absurdly popular and mainstream" and other such upityness.
2009 is looking like a very good year.
    Elitestly yours,
    Sci Guy
  • Ben · 11 months ago
@ArtsAngel: Hey Sarah! Great page, I'm so glad you guys are working together!
If you're set on changing the hand that does the anointing (and if you haven't already thought of this), you can always horizontally flip the panels that the hand is in, then just re-flip the words inside the bubbles. Hopefully it doesn't mess with the planned layout of the room. Hope this helps!
  • TheRedSparrow · 11 months ago
oh snaps! I can't find the button to go to the next page!!

    little help please? ^-^;
  • Samscra · 11 months ago
This looks gorgeous. Not only the art, but the story--the dialogue-- has a sort of spark that sucks you in. (not to mention that the guy on the cover looks very much like a young Jet Li. Did I mention how much I love Jet Li?) lol. I'm wondering just what the story on this is? Is it possible for you to give us a small summary, at least? Not that I still wouldn't read it, mind you, just curious.

please make the filename of the image be a page number instead of a date. It would make it easier for me to keep track of where I am in the story and to save the comic to my computer.

I am soooo excited that Sarah Ellerton is doing this comic. I've been following both her and Bobby for a long time now and I love them both.

allow me to join the countless others and say that I am really looking forward to seeing how this work turns out. I've loved Ms. Ellertons work since Inverloche and I followed Marry Me from the begining. Best of luck to the both of you.

Well, I must admit I was hoping for far more posts from Bobby's Last Blood comic last year, and I hope for more in general. But this comic looks like it contains a bit of that same unconventional take that I really enjoy about the LB story line. Lovely juxtaposition of the 'He' they are both speaking of. The disconnected feeling reminds me of some of the best writing from Anne Rice, where some father/pastor or religious person is speaking to some vampire or something. One "thinks" they know, and the other knows.

I'm unfamiliar with Sarah, but her art here has a strong painted feeling. I particularly like the her eye in the bottom left panel. The painted look makes this feel strongly in the dark ages of humanity (pre-cell phone / ipod / internet).

I hope this comic continues, the first real page and already my mind is spinning with possibilities.

    @ArtsAngel:
i don't know much about Catholism, but if you really feel like you should switch out what hands he's using, you could just flip the panels...? maybe i'd mess up the layout of the room or something, but it'd be easier than repainting it all. ^^; then again, i dunno how much it actually matters, cuz i would never catch that mistake.

i'm super excited about this comic as i'm a follower of both Bobby and Sarah's work. ^__^ i can't wait til this really gets rolling!

Wow... I've never, ever seen a comic get this much enthusiasm after just the title and one story page. And you're already number eight on Topwebcomics' top 100 list! This must be a new speed record (totally deserved, of course).

Best of luck to you both! ^_^

New page up very soon, but for some reason I'm currently not allowed to edit my comments (I'm new to this system), so this is basically a test post to see if I can edit new comments of mine.
